As Abhishek Karnani steps down from the International Advertising Association (IAA) India Chapter in September 2026 after a two-year term, the body is closing a chapter defined less by ceremonial events and more by a deliberate operational reset. The focus areas: artificial intelligence integration, workforce skilling, and high-level industry dialogue.
Making AI a boardroom discipline, not a stunt
The IAA’s approach to Generative AI placed human judgment, ethics and empathy at the centre. Instead of treating AI as a collection of tools, the chapter pushed it into leadership conversations where brand-building and accountability intersect.
The IAA Conversations series brought global and domestic voices to the table. Dr. Sanjay Pradhan discussed ethical accountability, Google DeepMind’s Dr. Manish Gupta unpacked frontier AI models, and futurist Adjiedj Bakas added a forward-looking view. In parallel, a LinkedIn-partnered CMO Roundtable called “Winning in the AI Era” convened senior executives to examine how AI shapes decision-making, creative direction and growth.
Skilling, inclusion and creative responsibility
The chapter also translated high-level talk into practical development. A key part of that work included:
- Snapchat AR training: an interactive workshop to upskill emerging creative talent in next-generation ad formats.
- Voice of Change roadshows: delivered with UNICEF and the Geena Davis Institute at Ogilvy, VML, BBDO and Madison, led by creative leaders including Josy Paul and Kainaz Karmakar.
- India Advertising Midline Study: a research push aimed at eliminating gender stereotypes in advertising.
- Flagship platforms: IAA Leadership Awards, IndIAA Awards and Olive Crown Awards were strengthened around business dialogue, creative excellence and sustainable operations.
The Leadership Awards featured a leadership exchange with Dr. Ram Charan on organisational agility and honoured Uday Kotak, Dilip Shanghvi and Prasoon Joshi. IndIAA kept creative standards front and centre with jury leaders such as Arun Srinivas and Jayen Mehta, while Olive Crown pursued net-zero carbon status and tree-planting to offset emissions.
Why this matters for marketing professionals
For marketing and agency teams, the two-year playbook offers a practical template: pair AI experimentation with human oversight, invest in inclusive creative standards, and use flagship events as operating proof points rather than purely celebratory moments. The IAA’s guiding philosophy that “what’s good is good for business” connected these threads from boardroom strategy to social campaigns on autism detection, eye donation and Assam flood relief.
With AdAsia 27 set to be hosted in India, the association’s next leadership will inherit a platform that has already moved beyond theory and into structured industry action.
