Skydance has confirmed who will run its news assets after the Paramount Skydance–Warner Bros. Discovery merger closes. The names signal continuity at the top of CNN and CBS News, even as the operating model remains unsettled.
Mark Thompson will continue as chairman and editor-in-chief of CNN Worldwide. Bari Weiss remains editor-in-chief of CBS News, the role she assumed in October 2025. Both join Skydance’s CEO News Executive Leadership Team.
A clear reporting line
The merger is expected to close on Tuesday, October 6. Once completed, Thompson and Weiss will report directly to David Ellison, chairman and chief executive officer, and Ynon Kreiz, co-chief executive officer.
The move ends speculation about Thompson’s future. Reports said he recently met with Ellison and was asked to keep leading CNN.
Independence, with caveats
Thompson told staffers he has “real confidence” that the new owners “understand and will fully support the principle and practice” of independent news at CNN. He said he would continue “as an independent editor-in-chief.”
Still, fundamentals are unresolved. It is not clear how CNN and CBS News will operate as corporate siblings, or how the editorial independence board—created as part of Paramount’s settlement with state attorneys general—will coexist with the two news units. Thompson said those specifics have not been finalized and added that leadership sees “news alongside entertainment as a top strategic opportunity for our new company.”
Other leadership roles
- Casey Bloys: co-chair and chief content officer, Skydance DTC
- George Cheeks: co-chair and chief content officer, Skydance TV
- JB Perrette: co-chair and chief business officer, Skydance TV and Skydance DTC
- Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein: co-chairs, Skydance Motion Picture Group
- James Gunn and Peter Safran: co-chairmen, DC Studios
Andy Gordon will become president of Skydance. Ellison will focus on long-term strategy, creative vision, talent relationships, strategic partnerships, technology and capital allocation, while Kreiz will handle day-to-day management and integration. All three will sit on the board, with Ellison as chairman.
What marketers should watch
For media planners and brand teams, the announcement locks in newsroom leadership but not the sales structure. Marketers should monitor how CNN and CBS News inventory is packaged after the integration, refresh brand-safety and contextual targeting controls, and avoid long-term news sponsorships until the editorial independence framework is clarified.
The names at the top are stable. The mechanics of the combined news business are not.
