Myntra’s chief marketing officer, Sunder Balasubramanian, has decided to move on after a close-to-four-year run at the fashion and lifestyle e-commerce platform. He joined Myntra in 2022 and, during his tenure, led the customer growth, marketing, creative and catalogue mandates.

Balasubramanian confirmed the move in a LinkedIn post. “After close-to four incredible years, this week marks my last at Myntra,” he wrote, adding that he was proud of the problems the team chose to tackle and the culture of ownership they nurtured.

A wide remit

At Myntra, the CMO role spanned the full growth engine. His charters included customer growth, marketing, creative and catalogue—a combination that sits at the intersection of performance, brand and category management. For an e-commerce player, that is often where pricing, merchandising and customer experience meet the brand.

The scope also reflects a larger shift in Indian e-commerce marketing: CMOs are increasingly expected to own both demand generation and the storefront experience, not just campaigns.

What the exit means

Leadership exits at this level tend to raise two questions: what changes at the brand, and what it signals about the executive market. Balasubramanian has not announced his next move, so the immediate story is less about a new rival hire and more about a rare senior transition at one of India’s most visible e-commerce brands.

For marketing professionals, the takeaway is that long, multi-charter tenures are a useful reference point. The role combined brand, growth, creative and catalogue—a portfolio that rewards generalists who can connect data-led performance with cultural relevance.

A career built across categories

Balasubramanian brings more than 20 years of experience spanning consumer technology, FMCG and advertising. His previous stops include:

  • Coupang
  • Hotstar
  • Colgate-Palmolive
  • McCann Worldgroup
  • Goldwire Communications

He began his career as an account executive at Goldwire Communications in 2000. Since then, he has worked across growth strategy, brand strategy, P&L delivery, new category development, digital marketing, innovation and team leadership.

The farewell as brand content

His LinkedIn note is also a reminder that a senior marketer’s exit can be more than a personal update. It named the Myntra leadership and marketing teams individually, gave a special shoutout to the Myntra SPIRIT team, reinforced the brand’s “WearYourselfFearlessly” spirit, and closed with gratitude. That turns a transition into an employer-brand and personal-brand moment at the same time.

For marketers managing their own career changes, the structure is worth borrowing: lead with what was built, credit the team, name the culture, and leave the exit energetic rather than transactional.

What to watch

Until Myntra names its next marketing leader, the attention will be on continuity. The next appointment will signal whether the brand doubles down on its integrated growth-and-catalogue structure or reshapes the role for its current stage.
