WPP Media has named Laura Ryan as its Chief Media Officer, handing the former Orion Worldwide Global CEO responsibility for global investment, partnerships, media management and activation.

The appointment places Ryan on the group’s leadership team as WPP Media works to tighten the link between media buying, client teams and technology. She will partner with global client leads, technology executives and external media partners to develop capabilities and products that the network says will create broader value for marketers and media owners.

A mandate built around integration

Brian Lesser, CEO of WPP Media, announced the move and framed the role around connecting client requirements with emerging capabilities.

“Laura knows how to connect client needs with new capabilities and bring people together to make it happen,” Lesser said in a LinkedIn post.

Inside WPP Media, Ryan will work alongside senior leaders including Adam Gerhart and Lauren Wetzel, as well as client and technology leads across the business.

From Orion’s global CEO to WPP Media’s top media seat

Ryan joins from IPG, where she most recently served as Global CEO of Orion Worldwide from April 2022 until June 2026. Her Orion tenure began in March 2011 and stretches across more than 15 years.

Before taking the top job, Ryan was Orion’s Global President from January 2021 to April 2022. There she held responsibility for direction, profitability and growth across 27 global markets.

  • As Global Client Officer, she worked with client-service teams to solve challenges through Orion’s proprietary products and, from May 2020, led expansion of OPEN, the company’s addressable offering.
  • As President, Orion U.S., she led short- and long-term strategy, with consecutive years of revenue growth and improved profitability.
  • Earlier roles included EVP, Director of Client and Media Services and SVP, Client Services.

Why marketers should pay attention

A Chief Media Officer role matters because it consolidates buying leverage, platform partnerships and activation under a single commercial lead. For advertisers, that can mean clearer accountability when media investment and adtech roadmaps need to move together.

The hire is also a useful lens for evaluating agency partners. Marketers can ask how a network’s top media leader has actually moved across client services, operations and product development, rather than judging the hire on title progression alone.

The bigger signal for agency networks

Ryan’s move from IPG to WPP Media fits a wider pattern of holding companies positioning one operator across media investment and activation, then asking that leader to connect the commercial engine to product and technology teams.

For media owners, that can mean more coordinated partnership conversations. For rival agencies, it raises the bar on how senior media roles are structured. What remains to be seen is how quickly WPP Media turns the appointment into visible product and capability changes for clients.
