Mumbai: JioStar has opened its ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 marketing with a promotional film that pairs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in an off-field, light-hearted conversation. The two batting icons look back at their time with Team India, then cheekily recreate the signature celebrations of KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and Captain Shubman Gill.

The film arrives after India’s 2-1 ODI series win over the West Indies and less than a year before the tournament. It closes with the line “Desh ka sawaal hai, maza toh aayega” — “It’s a matter of the country’s pride, it’s going to be fun.”

Why the campaign is starting now

JioStar is treating the film as an early build-up to the road to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. India is chasing a fourth consecutive ICC title, and for Sharma and Kohli the 2027 edition could be their final World Cup campaign. Those stakes give the promotion an emotional register that a routine fixture spot would not have.

The first live window comes quickly. India’s three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka will run from December 13 to 19, broadcast on Star Sports Network and streamed exclusively on JioHotstar. The film gives those matches a ready-made storyline: the last dance, the road back, and the banter in between.

Because JioStar has conceptualised the film, it can align the creative directly with its own broadcast and streaming conversation, using the same personalities across Star Sports and JioHotstar.

What the campaign gets right

The film leans on familiarity and nostalgia rather than pure on-field action. Three choices stand out:

  • Legacy over hype: framing the World Cup as potentially Rohit and Kohli’s last makes the promo feel like a milestone, not an ad.
  • Off-field authenticity: the duo recreates teammates’ celebrations, producing short, shareable moments that travel well on social media.
  • A repeatable fan hook: the closing line packages national pride into a simple, quotable phrase.

From teaser to live sports

The Sri Lanka ODIs are more than cricket fixtures; they are the campaign’s first measurable moment. Because the series sits on both Star Sports Network and JioHotstar, JioStar can test how the film’s tone carries into live match promos, second-screen content and streaming placements.

The film’s light, off-script feel also gives broadcast and social teams an easy content system: short clips of players imitating each other can be cut for reels, shorts and match-day programming without extra production.

What marketers should watch for

The real test is not the film itself but how consistently JioStar sustains the narrative through the Sri Lanka series and beyond. A strong launch can fade if the live coverage returns to ordinary match packaging. Campaigns that win are the ones that keep the human thread — the two stars, the final chance, the country’s pride — visible across every touchpoint.
