The 2025-2026 evening news season ended with a familiar total-viewer champion but a noticeably tighter advertising demo race. According to Nielsen data reported by Adweek, ABC World News Tonight with David Muir closed the broadcast year as the most-watched newscast in both total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demographic, marking ten straight years at No. 1 in total viewers.

The season in numbers

All three flagship evening newscasts moved in different directions. ABC and NBC posted year-over-year gains, while CBS lost ground in both measured categories.

  • ABC World News Tonight: 8.472 million total viewers, up 12%, and 1.071 million Adults 25-54 viewers, up 2%. It also recorded its largest audience in five years.
  • NBC Nightly News: 6.54 million total viewers, up 9%, and 949,000 Adults 25-54 viewers, up 8%. NBC posted its closest demo gap with ABC in seven years.
  • CBS Evening News: 4.04 million total viewers, down 3%, and 525,000 Adults 25-54 viewers, down 11%, the only double-digit decline of the season.

Year-over-year comparisons rely on Nielsen Big Data+Panel for 2026 versus Panel for 2025, so these movements are directional rather than perfectly identical measurement sets.

Why the demo battle matters

Total viewers make a headline; the A25-54 demo drives news advertising. NBC’s +8% demo growth and CBS’s -11% demo decline signal where advertiser demand may shift. In the week of September 14, ABC and NBC were separated by only 86,000 demo viewers—a narrow margin in a category where ratings points translate into pricing power.

CBS finished the season with the weakest demo trend, leaving media planners with a clearer two-way race at the top of the evening news daypart.

Momentum from the third quarter

Q3 2026 reinforced the season pattern. ABC averaged 8.394 million total viewers in the quarter, up 16% from a year ago, while NBC averaged 6.632 million, up 19%. CBS was the outlier: total viewers edged up 1% quarter over quarter but the demo slipped slightly.

The week of September 14 brought weekly growth for all three broadcasts. Still, the retitling of NBC Nightly News to NBC Nitely News on September 14, plus Friday retitlements for morning shows, meant NBC’s weekly average covered three days while ABC and CBS covered four. That context helps explain why single-week comparisons need caution.

What marketers should do

Evening news remains a reliable reach vehicle, but the audience composition is moving. If you are evaluating news inventory, treat total viewers and A25-54 performance as separate buying criteria. NBC’s momentum may give you negotiating leverage with the leader, while CBS’s demo slide could make it a value option for reach-only campaigns.

Watch quarterly demo trends before locking annual upfront deals: this season shows that a total-viewer lead does not automatically equal demo dominance.
