GNC India’s magnesium pitch: 1.7X absorption, not another bottle

GNC India CEO Mayank Jha on why the brand is pushing verifiable transparency, a non-buffered magnesium formulation and everyday wellness over gym-only sales.

Mumbai: India’s supplement shelves are crowded, and GNC India is positioning its latest magnesium as a trust play rather than another price-led launch. In an interview, CEO Mayank Jha explained why the brand is leaning on verifiable formulation claims and everyday wellness as its next growth lane.

A launch built around absorption

The new GNC Magnesium PureGlycinate is a non-buffered magnesium bisglycinate. Each serving delivers 440 mg of elemental magnesium, with a 1.7X more fractional absorption claim compared with regular or buffered magnesium glycinate. The formulation is also designed as more gut-friendly.

Jha’s starting point is that the magnesium category has enough bottles but not enough clarity. “The magnesium category doesn’t need another bottle on the shelf. It needs better consumer understanding,” he said.

That distinction matters because not every product labelled magnesium glycinate uses the same approach. Buffered versions can blend multiple magnesium forms, while a true non-buffered bisglycinate is chelated with glycine.

From gym shelf to everyday wellness

GNC India says its newer consumer may never set foot in a gym. Sleep, stress, recovery and daily energy are now entry points alongside traditional sports nutrition. Preventive wellness, Jha said, is becoming a parallel pillar rather than an extension of the sports business.

Alongside the magnesium launch, the brand has introduced Select Fermented Yeast Protein Isolate, a fermented protein aimed at muscle recovery and maintenance that is relatively new to India.

Marketing what consumers can verify

The context is a category where independent testing has repeatedly found protein products that do not match what is on the label. GNC India’s counter is documentation: batch testing, Certificates of Analysis, QR-linked COAs on creatine, and third-party certifications such as Informed Choice and Eurofins on selected products.

  • Non-buffered magnesium bisglycinate with 440 mg elemental magnesium and a 1.7X absorption claim.
  • Batch-level COAs and Eurofins testing, plus QR-linked certificates on creatine.
  • Informed Choice certification on selected sports nutrition lines to check for banned substances.
  • Distribution via guardian.in, Amazon, Flipkart, quick commerce and same-day delivery from Guardian pharmacies.

Content first, sampling later

On channels, Jha said video-first education has worked best because ingredient-led stories need explanation. The brand pairs that with Meta, newsletters, creator partnerships and community events. Sampling is not the opener; it converts understanding into trial once awareness exists.

The audience entry point changes. For younger consumers, GNC starts with sleep, stress and recovery in platform-native formats. For older buyers, the conversation leads with formulation, tolerance and reassurance.

Festive gifting without a single-need pitch

As Diwali and Christmas approach, GNC India is not reducing festive messaging to sleep and stress alone. Jha said gifting is increasingly about how people want to live and feel, spanning daily nutrition, immunity, energy, recovery, heart health and sleep support. The cultural entry point may change, but the brand promise of formulation integrity stays consistent.

On numeric claims such as an 83% sleep improvement, Jha was measured. Any specific figure must be backed by appropriate clinical evidence. “The stronger the claim, the stronger the substantiation needs to be.”
