Michelob Ultra is adding hockey to its sports marketing roster. The Anheuser-Busch brand announced a multiyear agreement to become the official beer sponsor of the National Hockey League in the U.S. The deal also makes it the official beer sponsor of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Stanley Cup Final.

With league rights in place, Michelob Ultra will activate around high-attention moments including the NHL Winter Classic and NHL All-Star, while continuing existing sponsorships with 18 NHL teams. Limited-edition team packaging is planned for the upcoming season.

The sponsorship rolls into Michelob Ultra’s ‘Superior Access’ platform, which is built to give fans an insider experience around major sports moments. In a statement, Kyle Norrington, CCO of Anheuser-Busch, framed the move as a way to bring hockey fans ‘closer to the league’s superior moments on and off the ice for years to come.’

That framing matters. Rather than treating the NHL deal as a simple logo placement, Michelob Ultra is using it as a content and experience engine, something brand marketers can learn from when evaluating their own partnerships.

The sports portfolio keeps growing

Michelob Ultra is not new to big-ticket sports. Its roster already includes the NBA, FIFA World Cup, the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024, Milano Cortina 2026, LA28, and the PGA Tour. The NHL fills a winter-heavy gap and adds another culturally charged stage for the brand’s message.

Why the structure matters

The partnership is built in layers, and each layer can play a different role:

  • League-level rights give national reach during the regular season and playoffs.
  • Event-level activations concentrate spend around the Winter Classic, All-Star and Stanley Cup Final.
  • Team sponsorships keep the brand embedded in local fan rituals across 18 markets.
  • Team packaging turns the sponsorship into a retail trigger and a collectible moment.

What marketers should watch

Sports sponsorship is still one of the strongest ways for beer brands to reach a broad, engaged audience, but the bar for activation has risen. Deals that only buy visibility tend to underdeliver; those that connect rights to fan experiences, packaging and content can work across the funnel.

For agencies and brand teams, the Michelob Ultra–NHL model is a reminder to map every sponsorship asset to a specific job: awareness, local relevance, retail visibility or loyalty, before signing.

The early test will be whether Michelob Ultra can turn league rights, team ties and packaging into a coherent fan experience rather than a collection of separate assets.
