Ujjivan Small Finance Bank has launched a new integrated brand campaign that takes direct aim at the perception problem embedded in its own name. Titled ‘Nothing Small About Us’, the campaign introduces actor and Padma Shri awardee R. Madhavan as the bank’s brand ambassador.

According to the bank, the campaign grew out of a customer insight: the word “small” can make people assume that the institution is built only for small-ticket financial needs, offers a narrow product range, or operates at limited scale. The new work is designed to close that gap.

The proof behind the reframe

Ujjivan SFB is using hard numbers to challenge the perception. The bank serves more than 1 crore customers through over 800 branches across 26 states and union territories. Its offering spans savings, deposits, lending and business banking, forex and NRI services, and investment and wealth solutions. Its loan book ranges from ₹6,000 to ₹250 crore, a spread that covers micro-credit as well as large commercial requirements.

Why R. Madhavan fits

Lakshman Velayutham, Chief Marketing Officer, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, said the actor’s credibility, authenticity and trust built over years make him a natural fit to carry the message. The bank also pointed to the alignment between Madhavan’s image of integrity, humility, versatility and authenticity and its own brand values.

Madhavan himself said he did his own due diligence before signing. He was quoted as saying, “there is nothing small about them.” That direct, first-person validation gives the campaign a credibility layer beyond a typical celebrity endorsement.

Campaign architecture

The campaign will run across television, print, digital, OTT/CTV, outdoor, social media and Ujjivan’s branch network. Production credits include Plan B Advertising Pvt. Ltd. as creative agency and Colonial Films as production agency; the film was directed by Rajesh Ramaswamy.

For marketing teams, the most relevant takeaways are:

  • Confront the misconception directly. Instead of avoiding the word “small,” the campaign turns it into the creative hook.
  • Back the tagline with proof. Loan ranges, branch counts and product categories make the reframe concrete.
  • Choose a credible voice. In financial services, a trustworthy ambassador can help reduce scepticism.
  • Use integration consistently. The same narrative runs across digital and physical touchpoints, including branches.

Why this matters in Indian financial marketing

Small finance banks are evolving beyond their microfinance origins, but brand perception often lags product reality. Ujjivan’s campaign is a reminder that category names can create invisible ceilings—and that marketing can push back when the product range has outgrown the label. The move also shows how a regional heritage brand can use national celebrity equity to signal scale while still retaining a grounded, trustworthy tone.
