Taboola is taking its AI answer engine beyond publishers’ websites and onto the lock screen. The content discovery and advertising company has struck a deal with Motorola to integrate DeeperDive directly into select moto g smartphones.
What the partnership changes
Motorola becomes the first smartphone manufacturer to build DeeperDive into the lock screen experience. Instead of unlocking the phone and opening a browser or app, users will be able to ask questions and explore topics such as sports, entertainment, finance, travel and politics straight from the lock screen.
DeeperDive combines generative AI with publisher content to return answers, related stories and follow-up context. Since 2025, publishers including USA TODAY Co., HuffPost UK, BuzzFeed Asia and Bangkok Post have integrated the answer engine into their own digital experiences.
The Motorola rollout will happen in phases across select moto g devices throughout 2026 and 2027, covering the UK, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Mexico and Argentina.
Why this matters for marketers
The lock screen has long been treated as a notification surface. This integration positions it as an active discovery surface, where a conversational answer can sit ahead of the app, the website or the search results page. On a lock screen, the answer is not one result among many; it is the first thing a user sees.
For content and performance marketers, that means the distribution game is shifting again. Just as SEO was built around appearing in Google results, visibility in AI answer engines may require content that is structured, citable and genuinely useful enough to be surfaced in a direct answer. Think of the lock screen as the top of a new attention funnel: question, answer, related story, click.
- AI answers reduce the number of steps between curiosity and content.
- Trusted publisher content becomes the source layer for those answers.
- Device-level placement gives discovery a built-in audience before an app is even opened.
What to do about it
Brands and publishers should treat answer engine visibility as a distinct channel, the practical side of answer engine optimization. If your content answers a specific question, make that answer easy to extract: clear headings, short answers, named facts and publisher-level credibility. Then track not just where your pages rank, but whether they are the source an AI answer draws from.
For brands publishing sports, travel, finance or entertainment content, short, quotable answers could become a new acquisition format. The economics are still emerging, but the direction is clear: if consumers start on the lock screen, marketers need a presence in the answer layer.
“DeeperDive creates a new way for people to explore their interests and get useful answers informed by trusted publisher content,” said Adam Singolda, CEO of Taboola.
The partnership builds on an existing Taboola-Motorola relationship, which already delivers personalised content recommendations to select moto g devices in some markets. Extending that to AI answers is less a surprise than a signal: the next battle for attention may happen before a user opens an app.
