NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas was the only evening newscast to post week-to-week gains in both total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demo for the week of October 12, 2026, according to Nielsen data reported by Adweek.
The broadcast averaged 6.642 million total viewers and 1.018 million viewers in the demo, and it marked its 10th week out of 11 with more than 1 million demo viewers.
The week’s ratings at a glance
ABC World News Tonight with David Muir kept the largest overall audience, but the demo story was uneven.
- ABC World News Tonight: 8.356 million total viewers, 1.133 million demo viewers; up 2% in total viewers, down 1% in the demo.
- NBC Nightly News: 6.642 million total viewers, 1.018 million demo viewers; up 2% in total viewers, up 1% in the demo.
- CBS Evening News: 4.219 million total viewers, 655,000 demo viewers; flat in total viewers, up 7% in the demo.
ABC’s 1% demo decline made it the only evening newscast to lose ground in any measured category. CBS posted the largest weekly demo growth, up 7%.
Why the demo split matters
Adults 25-54 is the main sales currency for national news programming. A total-viewer lead can still mask weaker momentum among the viewers advertisers pay a premium to reach. This week is a clean example of that split: ABC won on reach, while NBC was the only newscast to gain on both fronts.
Year-over-year comparisons show all three broadcasts rising by double digits. ABC was up 12% in total viewers and 18% in the demo. NBC grew 20% in total viewers and 32% in the demo. CBS climbed 14% in total viewers and 28% in the demo.
Read the fine print before drawing conclusions
The weekly averages cover Monday through Thursday only. Each network retitled its Friday edition—WNT-ABC, NBC Nitely News, and CBS Evening Nws—and those telecasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages. That makes it essential to separate regularly titled telecasts from specials when comparing one week to the next.
NBC’s run above the 1 million demo mark signals consistency where news advertisers focus their budgets. ABC’s total-viewer lead still matters for broad reach campaigns. For media planners, the framework is simple: set the objective first, then decide whether total reach or demo momentum is the metric that drives the buy.
What marketing teams should watch next
Weekly evening news ratings are a quick barometer for linear television’s remaining reach package. When the demo and total audience move in opposite directions, media plans that buy news should be explicit about which metric is protecting the campaign objective. NBC’s momentum and CBS’s demo gain are worth tracking if they hold across the season.
