The week of Oct. 12, 2026 delivered a rare clean sweep in cable news. Fox News, MS NOW and CNN all increased average total viewers and Adults 25-54 delivery in both primetime and total day versus the prior week, according to Nielsen big data plus panel figures. For advertisers and media planners, that means more available impressions in the demo across the board, but the distribution of those gains was not even.
CNN leads the weekly surge
CNN stood out in the demo that news advertisers watch most closely. Primetime rose 9% in total viewers to 628,000 and 15% in Adults 25-54 to 115,000. Total day grew 7% in total viewers to 420,000 and 21% in demo viewers to 68,000. That momentum moved CNN ahead of MS NOW in total-day demo delivery, reclaiming the No. 2 position among the three cable news networks for that daypart. CNN also improved its primetime demo rank among all basic cable networks from 11th to seventh.
Fox News and MS NOW hold their lanes
Fox News remained the biggest cable news draw. In primetime it averaged 1.724 million total viewers and 157,000 adults 25-54, up 8% on both counts week over week. In total day it drew 1.1 million viewers and 98,000 in the demo, up 3% and 4%. It stayed the most-watched basic cable network in total-day viewers.
MS NOW showed smaller but steady gains: 927,000 primetime viewers, up 3%, and 93,000 demo viewers, up 6%, with total-day averages of 595,000 viewers, up 4%, and 60,000 demo viewers, up 5%. The network also won Thursday, Oct. 15, as the most-watched cable news network in the demo during primetime.
The programming chart is a reach map
Fox News’ The Five moved back to No. 1 in Adults 25-54 with 245,000 demo viewers and led all cable news shows with 2.763 million total viewers. Fox News held 12 of the top 15 total-viewer slots and 10 of the top 15 demo slots. MS NOW’s Monday edition of The Rachel Maddow Show finished seventh in both measures, while Deadline: White House, The Weeknight and The Last Word also charted. CNN placements came from NewsNight with Abby Phillip and The Source with Kaitlan Collins.
Year-over-year tells a different story
Compared with the same week a year ago, Fox News was the only network to decline: down 26% in primetime viewers and 31% in the demo, and down 28% and 32% in total day. MS NOW grew 13% in primetime viewers and 48% in the demo, while CNN rose 19% and 44%. That divergence is the more important signal for marketers planning long-term news buys.
- CNN posted the week’s biggest demo gains: +15% primetime, +21% total day.
- Fox News still owns total reach: 1.724 million primetime viewers and 12 of the top 15 shows.
- MS NOW won Thursday primetime in the demo and grew strongly year over year.
What to do with this
Treat weekly cable news ratings as a reach and availability barometer, not a final budget. If you need news audiences in Adults 25-54, CNN’s total-day momentum and MS NOW’s Thursday strength suggest specific daypart opportunities; Fox News remains the scale buy. Compare week-over-week movement with the one-year trend before shifting share.
