Electronics retail chain Vijay Sales has signed former India captain Rahul Dravid as its brand ambassador, pairing a five-decade-old retail name with one of Indian cricket’s most trust-heavy personalities.

Dravid will lead the brand’s communication across television, digital, in-store and festive campaigns through the year, the Mumbai-headquartered retailer said. The signing comes as Vijay Sales pushes further into an omnichannel model, tying its physical store network more closely to online shopping.

Why Dravid, and why now

Vijay Sales positions itself around advice and after-sales relationships rather than one-off discount-led transactions, a proposition it packages as the promise “Delivering Apnapan.” Dravid, whose public image has long been built on dependability rather than flash, is an unusually neat fit for that message.

Nilesh Gupta, Director, Vijay Sales, said the business has “always been built on relationships, not transactions,” adding that Dravid represents those values with an authenticity Indians connect with as the retailer enters its next growth phase.

Dravid said some brands become part of people’s lives because of the trust they build rather than what they sell, and that he connects with the “simplicity and warmth” behind the Apnapan line.

The timing is a festive play

For consumer electronics retail in India, the second half of the calendar year is the money quarter. Television, refrigerator, air-conditioner and large-appliance purchases cluster around the festive window, and that is also when e-commerce marketplaces flood the market with deep-discount messaging.

Bricks-and-mortar chains cannot always win that discount war, so they compete on a different axis: demonstration, installation, service, exchange and advice. A year-long ambassador deal announced ahead of the festive stretch gives Vijay Sales a consistent face to carry that argument across screens and shop floors, instead of relying only on price-led creative.

What marketers can take away

Celebrity endorsements in India are rarely short of volume; what they often lack is fit. This deal is a useful case study in matching brand attribute to personality attribute rather than chasing reach alone.

  • Match the value, not the follower count. Dravid’s equity is reliability and understatement, which maps directly to a retailer selling trust and post-purchase support.
  • Use the ambassador across the funnel. The brief spans TV, digital, in-store and festive, which means the same face appears in awareness films and at the point of purchase, a cheap way to buy recall consistency.
  • Give retail media a role. In-store assets, signage and staff-led demos are underused endorsement surfaces for omnichannel retailers.
  • Anchor to a brand line. “Delivering Apnapan” gives the association a phrase to repeat, which usually outlives any single campaign burst.
  • Plan for the long tail. A year-round deal allows sequencing across festive, wedding season and new-product launches, rather than a one-film spike.

The bigger retail context

Regional and national electronics chains in India have spent the past few years rebuilding for a hybrid shopper who researches online, compares specifications on a phone and often still wants to see a screen or an appliance in person before buying. Building brand-level familiarity, not just category-level price awareness, is central to that shift.

Vijay Sales, which has served customers for over five decades across categories from first televisions to technology upgrades, is essentially betting that its differentiator is human, and that a familiar, credible face communicates it faster than a feature list. The company frames it simply: technology keeps changing, but the value of trust and relationships does not.

For marketers watching the festive calendar, the practical question is whether an ambassador is being hired to add reach or to add meaning. When the brand promise is emotional and the category is commoditised, the second job matters more.
