September continued a quiet stretch for cable news, with all three major networks posting month-over-month declines in both total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demographic during primetime and total day, according to Nielsen big data + panel figures.
Fox News held its usual position as the most-watched cable news network, but the monthly report carried a notable marker: its primetime total audience slipped below 2 million. For media planners, the trend matters less as a one-month story and more as a signal that cable news reach is becoming more show-specific and demo-dependent.
The headline numbers
Fox News averaged 1.717 million total viewers in primetime and 156,000 Adults 25-54 viewers in September. Total day averaged 1.112 million total viewers and 106,000 in the demo. Compared with August, primetime fell 19% in total viewers and 17% in the demo; total day was down 18% in total viewers and 11% in the demo. Against September 2025, primetime was down 32% in total viewers and 44% in the demo.
MS NOW ranked second in total viewers in primetime and total day, averaging 839,000 and 544,000 total viewers respectively. In the demo, it averaged 79,000 in primetime and 52,000 in total day. The network declined month over month but held year-over-year gains: primetime total viewers were up 4% and the demo up 14% versus September 2025.
CNN averaged 539,000 total viewers and 90,000 A25-54 viewers in primetime, and 373,000 total viewers and 53,000 demo viewers in total day. That left CNN and MS NOW separated by a thin margin in the total day demo, a tightening that will shape how both networks pitch advertisers.
- Fox News: 1.717M primetime total viewers; 156,000 A25-54; below 2M for the month
- MS NOW: 839,000 primetime total viewers; up 4% year over year in primetime
- CNN: 539,000 primetime total viewers; 90,000 A25-54 in primetime
Audiences are concentrating around anchors
Despite the network-level declines, individual programs still deliver outsized reach. Fox News’ The Five was the most-watched show in all of cable news with 2.794 million total viewers at 5 p.m. ET and led the advertiser-coveted A25-54 demo with 273,000 viewers. The Rachel Maddow Show on MS NOW remained the network’s strongest draw on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET with 1.786 million total viewers and 186,000 demo viewers. CNN’s NewsNight with Abby Phillip topped its lineup with 610,000 total viewers and 121,000 in the demo.
Smaller news networks kept niche positions: Newsmax’s Rob Schmitt Tonight averaged 305,000 total viewers, Fox Business’ Kudlow drew 244,000, and CNBC’s Fast Money Halftime Report led with 237,000 total viewers and 56,000 in the demo.
Why this matters for marketers
Linear cable news is still a reliable reach vehicle for certain audiences, but the value is shifting to specific dayparts and anchor-driven blocks rather than network-wide buys. The A25-54 demo remains the negotiating currency, and September’s declines — especially Fox News’ year-over-year demo drop of 44% in primetime — should push media buyers to review guarantees and ask for audience-based pricing rather than legacy CPM assumptions.
A practical framework is to treat cable news inventory as an audience concentration play: identify the two or three programs that over-index for your target, buy around those windows, and use total day as a lower-cost frequency layer. With the gap between CNN and MS NOW narrowing in the demo, expect more aggressive packaging and competitive messaging from both networks in the next sales cycle.
