Fox News and MS NOW each found a bright spot in the latest Nielsen cable news ratings, but the wins came in different parts of the schedule. During the week of Aug. 31, 2026, Fox News grew its Adults 25-54 audience in total day, while MS NOW improved in primetime. CNN, by contrast, lost ground in both total viewers and the demo across the measured dayparts.
Daypart-level demo movement
Fox News averaged 1.193 million total viewers and 117,000 A25-54 viewers in total day, down 5% in total viewers but up 13% in the demo versus the previous week. In primetime, it averaged 1.8 million total viewers and 167,000 demo viewers, slipping 11% in total viewers and 1% in the demo.
MS NOW averaged 823,000 total viewers and 88,000 A25-54 viewers in primetime, a 12% drop in total viewers but a 10% demo gain. In total day, it averaged 534,000 total viewers and 54,000 demo viewers.
CNN averaged 518,000 total primetime viewers and 97,000 demo viewers, down 15% and 14%, respectively. Its total day average was 367,000 total viewers and 55,000 demo viewers, down 8% and 10%.
Why the demo matters for marketers
For advertisers, total audience size is not the only signal. A25-54 is a key buying demographic for many news and current-affairs advertisers, so a total-viewer decline can coexist with a more valuable demo gain. Fox News ranked first in total primetime viewers but third in the primetime demo among basic cable networks. MS NOW placed third in total primetime viewers and 13th in the demo. The spread shows how ranking changes when the currency shifts.
- Fox News: total day demo up 13%, primetime demo down 1%.
- MS NOW: primetime demo up 10%, total day demo down 4%.
- CNN: primetime demo down 14%, total day demo down 10%.
Programming dominance
Fox News took 13 of the top 15 most-watched cable news shows. The Five led with 3.003 million total viewers at 5 p.m. ET and also topped the demo with 291,000 viewers. MS NOW’s The Rachel Maddow Show landed at No. 7 with 2.029 million viewers, and The Briefing with Jen Psaki took the No. 15 spot with 1.058 million. CNN’s CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip placed No. 15 in the demo with 127,000 viewers.
What media planners can watch
Year-over-year comparisons add context. MS NOW was up 24% in total primetime viewers and 52% in the demo versus the same week a year earlier. CNN grew 15% in total primetime viewers and 56% in the demo year over year. Fox News was down 9% in primetime total viewers but up 2% in the demo. These base effects matter: a weekly decline can still sit on a stronger year-ago trend.
For marketing teams that buy or analyze TV news inventory, this week is a reminder to evaluate dayparts separately, use demo delivery rather than total reach for audience-quality checks, and compare both week-over-week and year-over-year movement before reallocating spend.
