Google has added a new set of ad-experience signals to the Chrome User Experience Report, or CrUX, giving media buyers, publishers and ad tech platforms a shared way to measure how advertising actually loads on a page. The move lands as AI-generated search summaries put fresh pressure on site traffic and pricing models, making the quality of each visit more important than raw volume.
What Chrome is now reporting
The new CrUX measurements move beyond the traditional viewability and click metrics that many media plans rely on. They capture:
- Ad Count: average number of ads visible in the viewport
- Ad Density: average percentage of viewport area occupied by ads
- Ad Weight (Network Usage): resources consumed by ads, measured in bytes
- Ad Weight (CPU Usage): resources consumed by ads, measured in milliseconds
Google is clear that these are experimental signals for now. They are not part of Core Web Vitals, and the company has not set thresholds for what counts as a good or bad ad experience.
Why this matters for media teams
For marketers, these fields create a quality lens that sits alongside price. A placement with a lower CPM may look efficient, but if it appears in a crowded, processor-heavy ad stack, the real value of that impression can be lower. The CrUX signals help teams ask better questions: how many ads surround the placement, how much of the screen do they take, and how heavy is the experience on network and CPU?
Publishers and supply-side platforms get a similar opportunity. They can use the same aggregated data to demonstrate cleaner layouts, make inventory more defensible, and potentially earn better pricing for less cluttered experiences.
How the measurement works
Chrome identifies ad-related activity using network-level filtering and analysis of script execution. If a URL matches an ad filter list, it can be classified as advertising; resources or frames created by scripts already labelled as ad-related can also be flagged. Chrome then samples the visible viewport once per second to calculate ad count and density. CPU and network consumption are accumulated over the user session, with CrUX reporting results at the 75th percentile.
Google also noted that aggregated CrUX ad reporting is limited to sites with an ads.txt file that includes at least one authorized seller. Single-page applications may accumulate measurements across multiple soft navigations, which means local Chrome DevTools readings can differ from aggregated CrUX results.
What marketers should do now
- Ask agency and ad tech partners whether they plan to surface CrUX ad-experience data in placement or inventory reports.
- Use the four signals as a diagnostic layer for high-spend placements, not as a final scoring system.
- Monitor whether these metrics move from transparency tools into bidding, floor prices or campaign reporting.
Bill Reardon, GM of enterprise platform at Google Ads, said Display & Video 360 supports the initiative “to bring transparency to page layout quality,” adding that Google is interested in exploring how the signals can improve quality and advertiser goals.
Google told Digiday that independent ad platforms will get access to the data at the same time as Google’s own advertising businesses. The company did not say whether DV 360 is already testing the signals for inventory evaluation, bidding or reporting—an area industry watchers will follow closely as ad tech competition remains under scrutiny.
