Bigg Boss S20 opened its digital-first run on JioHotstar with 42.35 million unique viewers in the first seven days, according to audience measurement platform Chrome DM COTT. The season premiered on 6 September 2026 with Salman Khan returning as host, streaming on JioHotstar ahead of television and launching simultaneously across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam versions.
A young, female-skewed audience
Female viewers accounted for 24.13 million, or 57%, while male viewers made up 18.22 million, or 43%. The 18-24 female segment was the largest single cohort at 9.96 million, followed by the 25-35 female group at 9.52 million.
Among male audiences, the 18-24 segment contributed 7.42 million and 25-35 added 6.82 million. Viewers aged 18-35 together reached 33.72 million, or 80% of total viewership. The 35+ group added 6.35 million, while under-18 audiences accounted for 2.28 million, about 5% of reach.
State-level demand concentrates in top markets
Maharashtra led the tracked state markets with 8.23 million viewers, followed by Delhi NCR at 6.18 million and Uttar Pradesh at 4.97 million. Karnataka recorded 4.02 million and West Bengal 3.80 million. The top three markets alone made up 19.38 million viewers, or 46% of total reach, while the Rest of India category contributed 15.15 million, or 36%.
Mobile leads, but CTV remains part of the mix
Mobile was the top device category with 22.70 million viewers, or 54% of reach. Connected TV contributed 10.30 million. A 9.35 million viewer overlap across mobile and CTV, close to 22% of total reach, points to cross-device consumption during the opening window.
Pankaj Krishna, Founder and CEO of Chrome DM, said the opening numbers reveal “a notably young and concentrated profile,” and that mobile’s 54% share plus a 22% cross-device overlap suggests viewers “are settling into the season across screens rather than sampling it once and moving on.”
What this means for marketers
For advertisers and media planners, the numbers provide a clearer targeting map for reality-TV investment. With 18-35 audiences carrying 80% of reach and female cohorts leading, the opening window is a strong candidate for mobile-native creative, influencer-led brand integrations and companion campaigns that work across phone and CTV.
- Prioritise 18-35 and female-led creative for concentrated reach.
- Plan for both mobile and CTV; the overlap signals companion viewing opportunities.
- Use state-level splits to localise budgets in Maharashtra, Delhi NCR and Uttar Pradesh.
- Use opening-week benchmarks to track retention and sponsorship impact in later weeks.
The measurement also highlights how OTT platforms can now produce granular, near-television-style audience data for streaming properties, giving marketers a real-time view of where attention is clustering across screens and geographies.
