CNN was the only basic cable news network to post gains in both total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demo in the week of Oct. 5, 2026, according to Nielsen big data + panel figures. The result gives the now-Skydance network a rare positive ratings marker at a moment when its White House press ban and new ownership have dominated headlines.
What the ratings show
CNN averaged 577,000 total viewers and 100,000 demo viewers in primetime, up 4% and 3% respectively from the prior week. Its total-day average of 393,000 total viewers and 56,000 demo viewers was up 7% in total viewers and 8% in the demo.
MS NOW was the only network with across-the-board declines, slipping in both measurements in primetime and total day. Fox News remained the most-watched network by a wide margin: 1.6 million total viewers and 145,000 demo viewers in primetime, with the demo up 4% week over week.
Why the A25-54 demo matters
For advertisers and media planners, the A25-54 demo is usually the sharper signal because cable news inventory is often bought against adults 25-54 rather than total viewers alone. That is why CNN’s total-day demo gain is relevant: it narrowed the total-day demo gap with MS NOW to roughly 1,000 viewers.
- CNN: gains in both measurements, across primetime and total day.
- Fox News: still the reach leader, with 1.6 million primetime total viewers.
- MS NOW: down across the board, but still strong at the program level.
Programming bright spots
Fox News’ The Five led total viewers with 2.649 million at 5 p.m. ET and the network held 12 of the top 15 cable news shows. In the A25-54 demo, The Rachel Maddow Show took first place with 252,000 viewers, while its Monday episode ranked No. 6 in total viewers with 1.779 million.
CNN placed two shows in the demo chart: CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip in eighth with 144,000 viewers, and The Source with Kaitlan Collins in 14th with 116,000 demo viewers.
The year-over-year view
Compared with the same week a year earlier, CNN’s primetime demo was up 52%, while MS NOW’s total-day demo rose 24%. Fox News’ total-day demo fell 35% in the same comparison. That longer lens shows the current week is part of a broader reordering, not a single-week blip.
What to watch next
One week does not make a trend, but direction is building. If CNN sustains demo growth while MS NOW slips, media buyers may begin to revisit cable news allocations. Fox News’ commanding total-viewer lead still makes it the default reach option for many campaigns, so brands should track both reach and demo movement before shifting budgets.
