ZocDoc Campaign Puts Provider Fit Ahead of Speed

ZocDoc's first campaign under CMO Brian Irving positions booking as a match between patient needs and the right provider, not just speed.

ZocDoc is repositioning the online healthcare appointment as a matching problem, not a speed problem. The platform’s newest campaign, Ready to Be Seen?, shifts attention from finding any available provider to finding a provider patients can recognize themselves in.

A more personal patient promise

Created with creative agency SpecialGuest, the campaign launched Monday and will roll out across TV, audio, social and digital channels over the coming months. It follows two earlier campaigns built around patient choice, but this is the first to be shaped by Brian Irving, who joined as ZocDoc’s first chief marketing officer in April. Irving previously served as CMO at Lyft and Meta Reality Labs and has worked with SpecialGuest before.

The campaign follows three patients who each know something is off: an athlete who feels pain while running, a boyfriend who is allergic to his girlfriend’s cat, and a woman who knows her menstrual pain isn’t normal. None needs to be convinced to see a doctor; each needs the right doctor.

  • Athlete: pain while running becomes a search for a doctor who understands the patient behind the symptom.
  • Boyfriend: a cat allergy becomes a search for an allergist who can help him manage a real-life trade-off.
  • Woman: menstrual pain that feels outside the norm becomes a search for a provider who will take her concern seriously.

The creative process also surfaced an unlikely fourth character: the ZocDoc interface itself. Irving said the team began treating the UI as a person patients express their deepest monologue to. That does not mean there is a live chatbot yet—ZocDoc says it does not currently operate an actual chatbot trained for patient concerns. But the brand recently announced a collaboration with Google Health that will integrate ZocDoc’s real-time booking availability into the Google Gemini app.

Why provider fit is a marketing signal

The campaign aligns with changing patient behavior. Irving pointed out that health-seeking is increasingly happening through AI answer engines, and the Gemini integration is designed to meet patients where they are.

“Our mission is to give power to the patient,” Irving said. “If you think about the healthcare industry, it is really built for the patient. So when we start with the patient, that becomes our North Star.”

ZocDoc also uses patient surveys to track trust and awareness. One figure the brand surfaced is particularly useful for marketers: 71 percent of patients said finding the right doctor matters as much as getting seen quickly. That is the campaign’s central tension in a single number.

What marketing teams should watch

For healthcare and health-tech brands, Ready to Be Seen? is a reminder that availability is a hygiene factor, not a differentiator. A patient’s non-negotiables—whether around lifestyle, symptoms, or identity—are part of the search journey. SpecialGuest co-founder and chief creative officer Aaron Duffy framed the opportunity in the same way.

“Patients want to feel seen. Zocdoc helps people more easily find and book a doctor who really gets them,” Duffy said.

Marketers can borrow this shift from “book fast” to “book the right fit”: map patient needs and emotional context before promoting convenience, and treat AI-driven discovery as a new front door for brand trust.
