AI is changing product discovery, and creator content is doing more than influencing shoppers on social feeds. It is increasingly shaping what AI assistants recommend.
New IAB research finds 56% of consumers prefer AI-generated shopping recommendations that include creator or influencer perspectives. The survey spoke to 2,200 consumers across the US, UK, Australia, Mexico and India who had recently used AI for shopping research.
Why creator content gives AI a fresh signal
AI systems need timely, relevant input to answer questions such as, “Based on the latest reviews, what camera should I buy?” Creator reviews, demonstrations and comment threads provide that stream of human experience at speed.
A review of last week’s Samsung phone carries more current product information than a 2022 review of an older model. AI can also track sentiment over time: a visible swell of complaints about a specific defect can alert brands to an emerging issue before it becomes a crisis.
In a Cannes discussion, P&G Chief Communications Officer Damon D. Jones framed trust this way: “Consumers need to hear three voices: the brand, the expert, and their fellow consumer.” Creators, he suggested, occupy that expert role.
Platforms are paying for authentic human content
The appetite for human-generated material is now visible in licensing deals. Google expanded its Reddit partnership in February 2024 in an agreement reported at $60 million a year. OpenAI followed in May 2024 with a deal reported at $70 million a year.
The reason is straightforward: as machine-written text spreads, authentic conversation becomes scarce and valuable. That premium is why marketers should treat credible creator content as discovery infrastructure, not just campaign collateral.
A trust play, not a reach play
Tony Roma’s global CEO Mohaimina “Mina” Haque put it bluntly: “Reach is rented, but trust compounds.” A creator with 5,000 engaged followers who trusts a product can often be more effective than a 100,000-follower account whose audience does not act on the recommendation.
For brands, the practical work is threefold:
- Partner creators who have real product expertise and storytelling ability, not just large audiences.
- Mark up on-page creator reviews with structured data so AI can identify the creator, product, review, publication date and rating.
- Monitor comment sections, because AI models read consumer sentiment there too.
Creators can also adapt by writing substantive captions that demonstrate expertise, rather than thin posts. AI is becoming a discovery channel in itself: IAB data shows 51% of Gen Z and 46% of millennials have discovered a creator through AI results.
For AI platforms, the opportunity is to blend reliable brand information with experience-based creator perspectives. Consumers know AI can find products; they still want a credible human voice to tell them why the product is right.
The line between discovery and brand preference is blurring. The brands that structure expert, credible creator content for both humans and machines will be the ones AI recommends—and the ones shoppers trust.
