The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has reworked several Lions for its 2027 edition, replacing one major category and refreshing definitions and entry rules across B2B, luxury, brand and creator work.

The festival says the changes reflect evolving creative practices, changing consumer behaviour and emerging industry disciplines. For marketers planning next year’s awards calendar, the updates redraw the map of what the global benchmark will celebrate.

What is changing

The biggest structural move is the transformation of the Brand Experience & Activation Lion into the Experiential Lion. The new award broadens the scope beyond traditional brand activation and adds updated definitions and sub-categories for experience-led creativity.

Other updates announced by Cannes Lions include:

  • Creative B2B Lion: restructured with revised category structures, new definitions and an extended eligibility window to reflect complex business buying decisions.
  • Luxury Lion: updated to recognise how luxury brands build value beyond conventional advertising, with greater emphasis on editorial credibility, cultural influence and high-touch client relationships.
  • Creative Brand Lion: refreshed to focus on organisational capabilities and practices that enable creative excellence, plus a dedicated sub-category for small and medium-sized businesses.
  • Social & Creator Lion: now emphasises social-first creativity, ideas shaped by platform behaviours and mechanics, and campaign outcomes, with a clearer definition of what constitutes a creator.
  • Entertainment and PR Lions: the Entertainment Lion adds sub-categories for Original Entertainment IP and Food & Culinary Entertainment; the PR Lion adds a category for Creative Use of Generative Engine Optimisation.

Cannes Lions has also revised its Integrity Standards, with clearer guidance and a streamlined process for entries and approvals.

Why it matters

Award categories are not neutral containers; they signal the work the industry considers valuable. By elevating experience over activation and adding GEO to PR, Cannes Lions is telling agencies and brands to organise their best cases around longer brand experiences, creator-native mechanics and visibility in AI-generated search results.

Generative Engine Optimisation means making content answer-ready for AI search experiences; the new PR category moves that metric into award territory. For a market like India, where social-first and creator-led campaigns are core to many brands, the Social & Creator update is particularly relevant.

What marketers should do

Entries for the 2027 Awards open on January 14, 2027, and the festival runs in Cannes from June 21 to 25. The early move is to audit current work against the new definitions rather than reusing the previous year’s category logic.

Marian Brannelly, Global Awards Director at LIONS, said: “The updates to the Awards for 2027 reflect our belief that creativity is most impactful when it evolves with the world around it. By recognising the disciplines and dynamics shaping the creative landscape, we’re ensuring that the global benchmark for creative excellence continues to remain relevant, inspiring and aligned with how transformative work is made today.”
