Zydus Wellness has refreshed one of Indian advertising’s familiar brand properties. The nutrition beverage maker has launched the “India ka Complan Boy” campaign with 15-year-old cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as its face, shifting the long-running Complan Boy from a symbolic advertising character to a real young achiever.

The campaign keeps the brand’s “Thoda Plan, Thoda Complan” philosophy intact while linking Sooryavanshi’s cricket journey to ambition, preparation, discipline, family support and nutrition. It is an evolution of a legacy platform rather than a replacement.

From ad character to real story

The digital film traces Sooryavanshi’s preparation, training and cricketing milestones. According to campaign material, he became the youngest cricketer to debut for India in international cricket and scored his maiden T20 half-century against Zimbabwe in July.

That real-world record gives the campaign a documentary-style credibility. It also gives Complan an authentic ambassador in a market where parents and children follow cricket closely, especially as young players become mainstream stars through tournaments such as the IPL.

Why the brand is updating the platform

Tarun Arora, CEO and Whole Time Director at Zydus Wellness, framed the refresh as a response to how audiences change. “Brands stay relevant when they continue to evolve with the people they serve,” he said. Arora added that Vaibhav represents how today’s generation is dreaming in new and different ways, and that ambition, preparation, perseverance and family support have always been at the heart of Complan.

Sooryavanshi also brings a personal connection. “We are three brothers who have grown up with Complan in the house, so becoming ‘India ka Complan Boy’ feels really special,” he said. He added that he hopes the campaign encourages other children to dream big, work hard and remain grounded.

The bigger picture for marketers

Legacy health-drink brands in India have often competed on growth, memory and achievement narratives. Complan’s move signals a shift toward authenticity and real-life proof points rather than only product-led promises. For brand managers, the campaign is a reminder that a familiar asset does not have to be discarded to feel new. The execution changes the protagonist and the storytelling format while keeping the core message recognisable, which can reduce the risk of alienating existing consumers while giving new audiences a more current entry point.

What marketers can take away

  • Refresh the face, keep the promise. Complan retains its “Thoda Plan, Thoda Complan” idea while updating the campaign’s protagonist and tone.
  • Use a real story for credibility. A young athlete’s milestones give the platform a more authentic feel than a fictional character alone.
  • Anchor the product in values. Preparation, discipline and family support turn a nutrition benefit into an emotional narrative.
  • Choose an ambassador with organic relevance. Sooryavanshi grew up with the product, making the association feel less forced.

For marketing professionals and students, this is a useful case study in modernising a heritage property without abandoning the equity it has built. The campaign folds a familiar brand message into a current sports story, giving Complan a way to connect with both parents and younger audiences through an aspirational but relatable figure.
