Patrick Dempsey, familiar to audiences as a TV neurosurgeon, is now lending his face to a real-world oncology message. Guardant Health has named him the centerpiece of “The Reckoning,” a national campaign urging Americans to get screened early for colorectal cancer.

The multi-million-dollar effort launched Monday across major cable, streaming, and digital platforms. It is Guardant Health’s first campaign at this scale, marking a notable step into broad consumer health marketing. Colorectal cancer is now the second-leading cause of cancer death in the US, which helps explain the urgency behind the push.

Inside the creative

In the spot, Dempsey stands before a wall of names and ages of people who died from colorectal cancer—some as young as 49. He explains that screening from age 45 onward can change the prognosis because the disease is far more treatable when detected early.

The campaign states that 55,000 more Americans will lose their lives to colorectal cancer this year, using that stark figure to shift the conversation from statistics to people.

“Despite decades of access to other screening tests, more than 54 million Americans remain overdue for screening,” Steve Murphy, vice president of marketing at Guardant Health, told Adweek. “What’s more, colorectal cancer rates are rising among younger adults and it is now the leading cause of cancer death for those under 50.”

The product behind the message

Guardant Health introduced Shield, a blood test for colorectal cancer detection, in 2022. In 2024, the Food and Drug Administration approved it as the first blood test to qualify as a primary screening option for the disease. More recently, the American Cancer Society updated its screening guidelines to include Shield.

That matters because traditional colorectal cancer screening often requires a colonoscopy. A blood test can remove some of the barriers—such as time, preparation, and discomfort—that keep people from getting screened.

Why Dempsey makes sense

Guardant Health first announced the partnership in March, posting a digital video of Dempsey getting screened with Shield. His advocacy predates the campaign: he founded the Dempsey Center in 2008 to support people affected by cancer after his mother’s ovarian cancer diagnosis. She died in 2014, and Dempsey has continued to champion cancer research and early detection since.

That personal history gives the campaign a credibility that a typical celebrity endorsement might lack. It also helps the creative balance two goals: honoring people lost to cancer while motivating others to act.

What marketers can take away

  • Pair a recognizable face with lived experience to build trust in a sensitive category.
  • Use emotional storytelling—such as a memorial wall—to humanize a large public health statistic.
  • Anchor the message to a clear, age-based action: get screened from 45.
  • Leverage regulatory milestones, like FDA approval and updated guidelines, as proof points in the creative or supporting content.

For marketing leaders, the campaign is a reminder that purpose-led health messaging can move beyond awareness to direct behavior change when the creative gives viewers a specific next step. The focus on age 45 makes the ask concrete, while the tribute format earns attention without relying on shock value.

Guardant Health’s investment also shows how medical brands are starting to market screening options more like consumer products—using national video, celebrity talent, and emotional storytelling while staying anchored to clinical proof points.
