YouTube used its Made On event in New York on September 23 to make a clear pitch: the platform wants to be the whole operating system for creators, not just a video library. The new slate spans AI-powered discovery, live streaming, testing, community and monetization tools, with YouTube backing the push with creator-economy stats including 1.7 billion unique World Cup views, 540,000 supported full-time U.S. jobs and a $60 billion contribution to U.S. GDP.
AI discovery changes how views are found
Custom feeds, built on a custom Gemini model, let users prompt their own homepage feeds from long- and short-form content. Ask YouTube now surfaces shopping links and uses video imagery alongside thumbnails and transcripts to answer queries. The platform says videos presented through Ask YouTube will count as views.
That matters for creators because discoverability is shifting from browse habits to AI-assisted search. YouTube’s head of products, Amjad Hanif, offered a measured take.
“If a creator asks how they should change their strategy based on this, I would encourage them to not over-rotate.”
Live becomes more global and game-like
Live auto-dubbing rolls out soon to break language barriers, while Live showdowns let creators compete head-to-head as viewers fill a fan meter with on-platform gifts. YouTube Live product manager Barbara Macdonald called it a “gamification” feature that turns passive viewing into active participation. She also said a dedicated personalized live tab is a “huge priority” for tackling live discoverability.
Test before publishing, not just after
YouTube’s new video A/B testing tool lets creators upload three versions of the same video with different pacing or tone, and see which holds attention longest before publishing. This builds on thumbnail A/B testing from 2024 and adds topic-level performance comparisons.
- Upload three versions to test pacing, tone or structure pre-launch.
- Return to older videos to test new thumbnails or edit choices.
- Use topic benchmarks to spot content gaps instead of guessing.
Creator Shira Lazar said the value depends on whether tools deliver clearer signals “without flattening everyone into the same creative formula.”
Community and money in one place
YouTube added on-platform direct messaging with video sharing and group chats, plus members-only communities. Creator Jenny Hoyos, who has nearly 12.5 million followers, said keeping community and content in one app reduces the work of converting audiences across platforms.
On monetization, YouTube plans to expand its affiliate program, localize earning products and add pitch deck tools in Studio. YouTube VP of product Tim Katz framed the goal plainly.
“We want YouTube to be the most lucrative platform for creators.”
What marketers should watch
For brand and agency teams, these tools change creator briefs: live auto-dubbing can take a campaign global, gamified showdowns create real-time sponsorship moments, and pre-publish testing gives creators evidence instead of intuition when comparing formats. The risk worth monitoring is whether stronger optimization signals push every creator toward the same pacing and hooks.
The platform is competing with TikTok, Twitch and Instagram for creator time and ad budgets. YouTube’s answer is to give creators fewer reasons to leave, and give brands more measurable ways to reach the audiences they build.
