From search experiment to shopping aide

YouTube is turning one of its newest AI search experiments into a shopping tool. On Wednesday, at the company’s Made On YouTube event, YouTube announced that Ask YouTube, the conversational search feature launched as an experimental way to query video content with natural language, will now help viewers make shopping decisions.

Rather than returning a simple list of videos, Ask YouTube will be able to organise recommendations around a product query. That may include a comparison table that sorts product attributes or categories according to viewer preferences. Users will also be able to ask follow-up questions directly on the watch page of a relevant video.

How Ask YouTube works

Ask YouTube allows users to search with more complex, layered requests than typical keyword search. It combines Shorts and long-form content to build thematic guidance, such as step-by-step travel plans, introductions to new skills, or rounds of recommendations around a specific topic.

The shopping update is built on behaviour YouTube says it is already seeing: people are learning about products from creators, and they trust creator opinions. YouTube reported that over 140 million people used Ask YouTube during June to go deeper on videos, a jump of more than 500% since last December.

Emily Moxley, VP of Product Management for Viewer AI at YouTube, said the growth is powered by a custom Gemini model that connects queries to specific video moments, turning “passive search into an instant, meaningful connection” with the video and creator.

For professionals, that quote points to the mechanism: the feature is designed to connect a question to a specific moment in a video, not just surface a channel or title. That creates new incentives for how product information is structured in creator content.

What marketers should do

The immediate practical shift is toward answer-ready creator content. If YouTube can link a product question to the exact second a creator gives the answer, then videos that bury the answer or address it only in description text may be less likely to surface. Marketers should treat creator videos as a searchable product-information layer, not only an awareness medium.

  • Ask creators to state product categories, attributes, trade-offs and use cases clearly in their spoken commentary.
  • Identify the comparison and objection-handling moments in existing videos, and build content around those gaps.
  • Brief creators on likely follow-up questions, such as price, durability, alternatives or sizing, so the watch page can support deeper evaluation.

YouTube is not positioning Ask YouTube as a full commerce checkout. The announcement focuses on discovery, comparison and consideration. But for brands in categories where creators drive research, the feature narrows the gap between watching and deciding. The teams that plan for question-led discovery now will be better placed when conversational search becomes a default behaviour.
